Character Potassium carbonate is a white salt that is soluble in water (insoluble in ethanol) and forms a strongly alkaline solution.

The main purpose Potassium carbonate is widely used to produce glass and soap. It is also used as a mild drying agent. Many winemaking processes involve the use of this compound as a buffer. Potassium carbonate is also used as a fire extinguisher.
